  • Cyclic supercritical CO2 saturation has a stronger influence on the pore structures.
  • Mechanical fatigue caused by cyclic saturation resulted in a significant reduction in coal strength.
  • A conceptual model was proposed to build the linked pore structures and mechanical weakening effect.
  • Positive and negative effects of cyclic CO2 injection method for sequestration in coal seams were discussed.
