Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy represents the heat within the earth that can be sustainably extracted. Unlike fossil fuels, this renewable energy source has been proven to be a promising strategy to mitigate the effect of climate change, reduce air pollution/carbon footprints, and have the capacity of targeting the energy demand.
We model geothermal borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) via analytical methods to optimize the thermal design and performances.
Flow chart to demonstrate the computational framework (Hefni et al., 2022).
During my tenure at CanmetENERGY in Varennes (Natural Resources Canada), I experimentally investigated the optimum discharge pressure control of a transcritical carbon dioxide direct expansion ground source heat pump (CO2-DX-GSHP) to maximize the thermal performance. In particular, I developed a correlation between the CO2 outlet temperature from the gas cooler and the optimum discharge pressure for spacing heating applications in Canada.
